Social networking tools

I liked the map showing the spread of different social networking tolls all over the world.

I think this is the way to go for the teen market - however it would have to harness other sweetners to get them intereseted and ' a as a friend"

online applications and tools

This is sort of like what we do with our staff wiki. all staff can collaborate on a document and there is only one version.

Not sure if my email from google docs worked. Please let me know

Mashups

Not sure how this could be used. Maybe with local studies pictures one could add audio and test to each picture.

Podcasting

I think Podcasting would be very useful to do in the library. Author talks could be viewed by many more people (often our talks are booked out).

I also like the idea of using them for library tours and training

Answer boards and social searching

I don;t like the use of the title 'slamming the boards'. It seems like librarians are always trying to justify themselves. We don't have to put something else down to promote ourselves. Rather we should promote the fact that we can answer any question (given time).

I often come across answers to my queries by searching (mostly for travel information - how far from heathrow T1 to Heathrow T2) on the internet.

Library thing

Tried to embed the HTML code from Library thing but did not work

Tagging

I think delicious is useful if you move around computers. I have one at work and one at home with favourites which are relevant. Could be used for reference work .

VIDEOS ONLINE

What possibilities can you think of for your organisation?

I can see opportunites for using videos to publicise the library. A video of a library tour would be good for new members and also you could videos for library instruction for the public.

Also I think podcasting author talks is good

WIKIS

What did you find interesting?
I enjoyed looking at other wikis because we have one at our library which I administer.
However I usually look to see how recently updated it was and it is sometimes rare to find one which has recent updates.

What types of applications within libraries might work well with a wiki?
We use ours for collaboration on projects and I have used it a lot to organise staff training. Participants have to update the timetable with their preferred date. This is good because it has forced staff to use and learn about the wiki.
What do you like about RSS and newsreaders?
Its a bit like adding to favourites. Certainly of use to people who are closely following something

What sites did you select for your RSS reader?
I selected the following:

BBC News News Front Page World Edition (10) (0)
Bloglines News (10) (0)
iTunes Top 25 Songs (0) (0)
Powerhouse Museum - Photo of the Day (10) (0)
The Shifted Librarian (0) (0)

How do you think you might be able to use this technology in your work?
I can see that it would be good to keep tabs on what other libraries are doing and any changes to regulations which effect libraries, like OH & S

How can libraries use RSS or take advantage of this new technology?
As above

Did you find any good examples of other library blogs?
I did not add any library blogs, although I have looked at many. Most liberary blogs struggle to get many posts, however it is more interesting to see how many views
I did not manage to download the first picture of the library from Flickr. May have had copy right.

This is a photo of a book cover which was returned to us which we found quite comical. A book about dog training which has been chewed!!!
I have uplaoded a picture of the first library I worked in. In 1980 I worked as a library assistant in this carnegie building. Notice the blue sky??
What do you hope to learn from the program?
Consolidate what I know already - help me prepare trainng for the library staff

What do you think about Lifelong Learning?
Its the only way to go, be - what more is there?

What other blogs have you discovered? What do you like about them?
I have looked at some fantastic ones. The best ones have great quality graphics and good English!

Can you see a use for blogs inside the Library?
Yes I can see the use for a readers advisory blog.

How about blogging for a client audience?

Yes I think targetting is the way to go. Apparently seniors are the most active bloggers.
